A "self-priming" centrifugal pump overcomes the problem lifting water to the pump by mixing the air with a reservoir of water in the case (volute). This creates a frothy mix of air bubbles and water.
Note: There must be enough water to cover the eye of impeller for the pump to self prime. Even the best self primers must have water added to the casing at initial startup.
The water and air are discharged together by centrifugal action of the impeller into the water reservoir. The air, being lighter, rises while the water, being heavier, drops back into the case to be mixed with more air. This continues until all the air has been evacuated and and the pump becomes "Dynamic" or "primed".
Self-priming pumps are a sensible solution for industrial and municipal applications. They require very little attention, resulting in significant savings of maintenance time and money.
